“Statues are a very complex issue,” says Sims, when asked about the significance of his image. “I think we are being given an opportunity to see statues for exactly what they are. In the past, we have walked past them and haven’t really looked at them. They felt decorative. Perhaps we looked at them without context. Statues are collateral damage, as far as I’m concerned. What’s most important about it is we are having a conversation about history and how it is shaped in schools.
