David Speirs, who held the role of SA opposition leader for almost two-and-a-half years, formally quits parliament 10 days after he revealed police had arrested him on suspicion of drug offences.

Mr Speirs's departure comes just over a decade after he first entered parliament, in March 2014, as MP for the southern suburbs seat of Bright. Later the same day, SA Police released a public statement that said Mr Speirs had been arrested at Berri in September and subsequently charged with two counts of supplying a controlled substance, over offences allegedly committed in early August.

A month later, The Advertiser newspaper published photos and video that appeared to show him snorting from a plate. The Liberals have chosen Amanda Wilson, who is currently the mayor of the City of Holdfast Bay — a council whose local government area overlaps with the electorate.After the role of Liberal leader was vacated by former premier Steven Marshall in the wake of election defeat in 2022, Mr Speirs was elected as his successor in April of that year.
