Stearns explains how this job is “fundamentally different” than it was in Milwaukee, why the Mets won’t be this quiet for long and more.
PORT ST.
Fla. — David Stearns grew up in Manhattan in the shadow of a championship. He was 20 months old when the won the 1986 World Series, too young to remember his family team’s last moment of triumph. He liked shortstops, so his favorite player was Kevin Elster. Then he fell for another light hitter, Rey Ordonez, before Mike Piazza came along and the good times returned. Baseball captivated Stearns and drew him in for 15 years, nonstop, after his graduation from Harvard in 2007.
