England bowler calls time on international cricket after being only member of World Cup squad to be overlooked for a central contract
AHMEDABAD — David Willey has announced his retirement from international cricket eight days after it was announced he was the only member of England’s World Cup squad not to receive a central contract.
Willey, one of England’s better performers in India who dismissed India’s Virat Kohli for a duck in Lucknow last Sunday, missed out on a central contract despite the fact the England & Wales Cricket Board handed out deals of varying lengths to 29 players.Announcing his retirement on social media on Wednesday, Willey said: “I never wanted this day to come. From a young boy, I’ve only ever dreamed of playing cricket for England.
“To my wife, two children, mum and dad, I wouldn’t have been able to follow my dreams without your sacrifice and unwavering support throughout. Thank you for sharing the special memories and picking up the pieces when I’ve fallen apart – I’m eternally grateful. Whether England feel they can select a player who has announced his retirement mid-tournament for maximum impact rather than waiting until the end of the campaign remains to be seen.
