David had a successful banking career before helping secure the future of Castle Douglas Community Centre
There’s the successful banking career which began in Wigtown as a teller with the British Linen Bank at the age of 17, then progressed with the Bank of Scotland into management positions in Dumfries , Glasgow, Argyll and Carlisle. And, not least, almost half a century of happy marriage to Isobel.
“I was selected to take part in a young farmers’ exchange trip to Canada – 12 weeks in Ontario on 13 different farms, four weeks driving to Vancouver and back then two weeks in Ontario again,” he recalls. “I was selected to play for the Bank of Scotland against the Bank of England in 1977 for the Queen’s Silver Jubilee. It was at the Bank of England’s rugby ground – and we won.
“I have been to Threave games as well – it’s important to support your local team rather than the big teams. “In Dumfries that wasn’t very easy – the Royal Bank of Scotland branch was on the other side of the square!“After that I was invited for an interview in Glasgow chief office and offered a position in the West Area inspection team and moved to Glasgow in October 1978.”
“The manager admitted it and when challenged about the assistant manager all he said was “you can’t trust anybody in this bank!“I gathered all the evidence together and presented it to the area inspector. We called the member of staff into the interview hall and told her she was being suspended. And she just “said “Aye, and what do you want me to do now – burst into tears?”“It was a hassle for them but 99 branches out of 100 were fine.”“We were staying at the Selkirk Arms and were locked out.
“Well, I joined the British Linen Bank in Wigtown in 1969 aged 17 and a half,” he informs me with trademark precision. “It came totally out of the blue – I had no inkling it was going to happen whatsoever and it was very different from Glasgow, where lending was mostly commercial.“There were four Glasgow chief office districts – south-west, which was Dumfries and Galloway and Ayrshire, Glasgow, Lanarkshire and west.
“In 1994 in Dumfries, there were three branch offices in the town, on English Street, Irish Street and Queensberry Square.
