Davina McCall revealed that she underwent brain surgery to remove a colloid cyst in November. The Masked Singer star was taken to intensive care after the operation before recovering at home. Eight weeks after the procedure, she spoke with Dragons' Den star Steve Bartlett in a podcast interview, which she described as a 'safe space'. This conversation prompted Davina to seek professional help from a mental health counsellor.
She credits a comment from her partner, Michael Douglas, as the 'missing piece of the jigsaw' that helped her fully process the experience. On her Begin Again podcast, the 57-year-old explained that the combination of the podcast interview and the hour-long counselling session made a 'massive difference'. Davina stated, 'Michael said to me the weekend after that 'oh, you’re back' and it was like the piece of the jigsaw that I was missing, it was a bit like therapy.' This experience led her to realize the importance of seeking support and acknowledging the emotional impact of her surgery. Davina has been dating hairstylist Michael since 2019. They had known each other for years prior, with Michael working as Davina's hairstylist during her time presenting Big Brother. Davina wants to challenge the perception that a benign tumour is not life-threatening. She shared that she even created a WhatsApp group with friends and family in case something went wrong during surgery. She emphasized the potential risks associated with the procedure, such as stroke, epilepsy, or bleeding, which highlighted the seriousness of the situation for her. Although Davina admits life will 'never be the same' after her tumour, she sees it as a positive change. She believes that 'A life lived in fear is a life half-lived.' Davina recently resumed her gym routine two months after surgery, taking things 'super easy'. She prioritizes walking every day and feels good about returning to exercise. She will be appearing on The Masked Singer on ITV One tonight, February 8th, alongside Jonathan Ross, Maya Jama, and Mo Gilligan, attempting to unravel the identities of the celebrities performing in disguise.
