Fitzgerald has always wanted his teams to play like underdogs. With Antrim, favouritism is a rare thing. Being written off in game after game is something that the Clareman relishes.

When the 2008 hurling Championship started, Davy Fitzgerald was still a young man. He was 36 years old and had only retired from a long spell as a Clare player at the end of March.

By the end of that Championship, he was standing on the Croke Park sideline on All-Ireland final day. Now he's answered the call from the far north from Antrim. Fitzgerald is no longer a young man. He turned 53 last week and has had some serious health issues. When he got married four years ago, there was a photo spread of posed photos in RSVP magazine. Fitzgerald has appeared regularly on The Late Late Show. He's one of the brains behind the extraordinary success story of 'Ireland's Fittest Family' and his TV series 'Davy's Toughest Team' was both widely watched and widely praised.

"I'd already interviewed John Allen, the Limerick manager, and he'd mentioned the weather conditions. I was making small talk with Davy as we walked along and said that Allen figured it would be tough going - 'I don't give a damn what John Allen thinks', was his reply. It's not unusual for former teammates to drift apart once they all slip into retirement but Fitzgerald has always seemed to relish seeing himself as an independent republic.
