Scientists studying biodiversity in the Eastern Himalayas stumbled upon a stunning and extremely rare sight—a blue ant.
“The shade of blue observed in these ants can be described as a deep sapphire shade,” said study co-author Ramakrishnaiah Sahanashree, a conservationist with the Bangalore-based nonprofit Ashoka Trust for Research in Ecology and the Environment. Paraparatrechina typically live in tropical environments from rainforests to forest clearings in habitats ranging from leaf litter on the ground to tall tree canopies.
While blue is a relatively uncommon sight in the animal kingdom, some fish, frogs and birds, as well as invertebrates like spiders, flies and wasps, do display blue coloration.
