Experts have issued a warning about the possible arrival of deadly red fire ants in Britain.

The discovery of one of the world's most invasive species in Sicily is the first time they have been identified in Europe, sparking fears the ants could reach the UK.

The ants have been responsible for more than 80 deaths in the US where it is estimated 14 million people are stung annuallyResearchers for the Current Biology journal have pointed out that London could be a hotspot for the ants. Other large cities in Europe would also be suitable for red fire ants to thrive, including: Paris, Rome and Barcelona.
