Deadly Victorian Superbug Sweeps UK, Threatening Nation's TB Status
TuberculosisUKWHO

A resurgence of tuberculosis (TB) cases in the UK threatens to undo years of progress in combating the disease. The World Health Organization (WHO) status of the UK as a 'low-incidence' country for TB is at risk due to a significant increase in cases.

A resurgence of tuberculosis (TB) in the United Kingdom threatens to undo years of progress in combating the disease. The World Health Organization ( WHO ) classifies countries with fewer than 10 cases of TB per 100,000 people as 'low-incidence'. However, according to the UK Health Security Agency (UKHSA), cases have risen by 11% in 2023, equivalent to 500 extra cases, and a further 13% in 2024, adding over 600 more cases.

This worrying trend could lead to the UK losing its WHO 'low-incidence' status, which it has held since 2017.The UKHSA attributes the surge in TB cases to several factors, including increased social mixing and international travel following the Covid-19 pandemic. Shifting migration patterns have also contributed to the 're-emergence, re-establishment, and resurgence' of various infectious diseases, including TB. England's current TB notification rate is 8.5 per 100,000 people, exceeding the WHO threshold in some areas. Bradford, for example, has a rate of 14 cases per 100,000 people, making it one of the UK's most concerning hotspots.General Practitioners (GPs) are legally obligated to report suspected or confirmed TB cases to the National Tuberculosis Surveillance System. If this concerning trend continues, urgent action is needed to prevent the spread of TB and to secure the UK's WHO 'low-incidence' status. Public health campaigns, enhancing TB screening and diagnostic capabilities, and addressing social determinants of health are crucial steps in reversing this alarming rise in tuberculosis cases
