But it took the entire season to see what was obvious from the jump. We were feeling sorry for Iowa defenders during the season opener against eventual FCS national champ South Dakota State.This is because most of us assume a team with an elite offense always has a chance and a team with a terrible offense never has a chance.
As for which is better to watch, I’m the wrong person to ask. I’m a sicko. I watched Iowa games just to see if the Hawkeyes’ defense could outscore the Hawkeyes’ offense. I think the average fan would much prefer to watch a team with an elite offense and a terrible defense because shootouts are generally more exciting than rock fights.
Richard’s question is excellent, and it brings up another thought: If you made a team consisting of the USC offense and the Iowa defense and had Riley and the Trojans’ offensive staff coach the offense and Iowa coordinator Phil Parker and his staff coaching the defense, could that team compete for the national title?
