I’m a bit of a control freak when it comes to my finances and understand how important it is to be self-sufficient.
Dear Coleen I’m a woman in my 50s and have been seeing a lovely man for nearly a year. My issue is, he’s much better off than me, which isn’t a problem in itself, but he likes to go out for dinner a lot and do other nice things that I can’t afford on my budget.
Now I’m very careful to live within my means and I never want to rely on anyone else for money again. I’d love your opinion – am I being a bit over the top? As with most issues that crop up in a relationship, compromise is key. So, when it’s your turn to arrange a date, you could suggest a romantic night at home and cook him a nice meal, which will cost the price of the ingredients. Or you could take a picnic somewhere beautiful.
