🗨️ ‘Dear oh dear’ King Charles expressed the feeling of a nation in just three words ✍️ Simon_Kelner for ipaperviews
We will never know for sure, but let’s take the charitable view and assume that King Charles, as is his way, was trying to leaven the formality of the occasion. The fact that he apparently didn’t appreciate his words would be caught on camera, and would be open to misinterpretation, speaks of a certain naivety and even insensitivity, but not necessarily of harmful intent.
It’s possible, also, that his words carried no freight at all: he was effectively clearing his throat absent-mindedly, rather like the way men of a certain age exhale when they sit down, or indeed stand up. Nevertheless, the damage has been done, and Ms Truss will have to endure this taunt as an opening salvo from the opposition at Prime Minister’s Questions for a little while yet. “Back again? Dear, oh dear.” Cue uproarious laughter from the Labour benches.
But King Charles could have meant it. There was certainly no doubting what he thought of the fountain pen that leaked at a signing ceremony just after he’d ascended to the throne. Here, also, he was caught off guard, but on camera. “”, he said. “Every stinking time.” Perhaps his “Dear, oh dear” on this occasion was his exasperation at the quality of his conversation with the Prime Minister, not to mention the efficacy of her government. In that, he was certainly capturing the public mood.
They may only be three little words, but, as we know, three-word phrases – or tricolons – have had a special communicative power throughout history, ever since the greatest soundbite of all: “Veni, vidi, vici” [I came, I saw, I conquered]. In politics, the tricolon has been a favoured tactic of successive administrations to convey complex policies.
