The Shia Muslim police state remains committed to Israel’s destruction and will continue to arm terrorist proxies from Lebanon to Yemen
Rescue team members search for the wreckage of the helicopter carrying Iranian president Ebrahim Raisi after it crashed in Varzaghan in northwestern Iran in a helicopter crash has raised inevitable concerns about how the Islamic Republic will react as it continues its proxy war with Israel and the West.
Machinations in domestic politics are likely. But don’t expect any sudden change in foreign policy or strategy. The Shia Muslim police state remains committed to Israel’s destruction. It will continue to arm terrorist proxies from Lebanon to Yemen. “I think the greatest impact is the loss of the foreign minister,” says Andreas Krieg, of King’s College London’s Institute for Middle Eastern Studies. “Because not only has he been the face of the foreign security policy for Iran, but he’s also been the charismatic guy who maintains the personal relationships with counterparts. I think diplomacy is important and it is something that is based on personal relationships and personal interactions.
In Iran, few people other than regime apparatchiks, some religious extremists, will shed any tears over Raisi’s passing. It’s not clear whether the reactions from Iranian commentators regarding the impact of events inside Iran were based on hope or expectation.
