A new poll reveals that 55% of Britons support the reintroduction of capital punishment for certain crimes, with support particularly high for cases involving serial murder and terrorism.

A recent poll conducted by the public opinion think tank More in Common reveals a majority of Britons support the reintroduction of the death penalty for certain heinous crimes. The survey, which polled 2,016 adults, found that 55% of Britons favor capital punishment for crimes such as serial murder and deadly terrorist attacks. Support for the death penalty for rapists also stands at 56%. This represents a rise from 50% in autumn 2023, as reported by The Times.

The poll follows recent debates surrounding capital punishment sparked by the sentencing of triple child-killer Axel Rudakubana. Though Rudakubana was 17 at the time of the crime, which resulted in the deaths of three young girls, he escaped a whole life sentence due to his age. He is currently serving a 52-year sentence at Belmarsh prison. Luke Tryl, executive director at More in Common, commented on the findings, stating that the public's stance on the death penalty remains a point of contention. While acknowledging the likelihood of the current government not reopening the debate, Tryl emphasized the need for the government to address public concerns regarding existing sentencing options for convicted terrorists and murderers. He highlighted the public's desire for assurance that individuals like Rudakubana will never be released. Prime Minister Sir Keir Starmer has publicly declared his opposition to capital punishment throughout his career. As a barrister, he defended convicts facing the death penalty in several Caribbean countries. He has also actively campaigned against the death penalty in other nations, including Taiwan. The government has firmly stated its position against reintroducing capital punishment. Parliament abolished the death penalty over 50 years ago and has consistently voted against its restoration in recent decades
