A former prosecutor knew nothing about Ellen Greenberg’s death when he first read her file in 2016. He’s been consumed by its inconsistencies ever since.

That’s when he was asked by a “friend” outside the office to delve into theprepares to sit for a sworn deposition in a lawsuit brought by Ellen’s Harrisburg-area parents
At the time of her death, the 27-year-old teacher was seeing a psychiatrist and being medically treated for anxiety. By assuming suicide in the Ellen’s death, police did not treat the bloodied Manayunk apartment as a crime scene that evening. The abrupt switch coincided with a meeting in the ME’s office between detectives and at least one prosecutor on the case. This meeting is the subject of Joshua and Sandee Greenberg’s second lawsuit stemming from their daughter’s death.D’Andrea knew none of this when he asked his supervisor in the DA’s office whether she’d mind if he took a look through Ellen Greenberg’s case file in his spare time.D’Andrea got the okay.
Chief among them was a reference to a report by a forensic neuropathologist who was supposedly contracted by the ME’s office to review a deep knife wound to the back of Ellen’s neck. The goal of the exam was to answer a key question: Did the knife pierce Ellen’s spinal column, instantly ceasing her motor control?
This image is the result of a 3D computer analysis of the trajectory and depth of all 20 of Ellen’s stab wounds. “In reviewing everything then and now, that’s one of the things that stood out to me,” D’Andrea said. “That line of blood had no streaks or drag marks on it. At one point in time, the blood was running in that line, and she had to be in a position long enough for the blood to dry in that manner without drag marks or streaks.
“If no one could have been inside the apartment, it’s case closed,” D’Andrea said. “But it’s not a deadbolt. It’s a hotel locking mechanism. The deadbolt was a latch. I debunked that immediately.”
