Cricket – a game that is currently delighting fans with both the male and female Ashes – is also a sport riddled with antique levels of racism, snobbery and sexism.
The home of cricket, Lords, still hosts an annual Eton versus Harrow match but has never seen an England v Australia Women’s Test. Today’s long-awaited report from the Independent Commission for Equity in Cricket makes clear that the racism suffered by Azeem Rafiq at Yorkshire is rife across the game, along with elitist and misogynistic attitudes.
