A major shake-up of Australia’s military strategy and procurement processes risks underestimating the country’s manufacturing capacity and overlooking domestic industry in favour of big overseas companies, a Melbourne defence company fears.caused by a local “quest for perfectionism” as a feature of the country’s defence procurement approach.
“Nobody has ever called me, none of my customers in defence in Australia have ever called me to say, ‘have you got enough capacity?’,” Michael Zimmer said.“So this capacity issue seems to be coming from the subsidiaries of the overseas primes that are operating here, and it sort of suits them in a way.”
Matt Pearson, co-founder of Adelaide-based Fleet Space, says the Australian space industry has commercial capability to deliver for Defence.“If the [review] means that Australian taxpayers are investing in overseas economies to increase capacity to manufacture military equipment, then that investment should also include building capacity in Australian-owned companies,” said.
“We’re very aligned with the direction and I think we’ve long said that procurement timelines for space capabilities, not just for military, but for commercial as well, are generally way too long and technology changes on the ground so quickly,” he said.
