Attorneys for a woman accused of striking her Boston police officer boyfriend with her SUV and leaving him for dead in a snowbank outside another officer’s home have begun presenting their case that she was framed by police. A snowplow driver testified Friday that he didn’t see a body while on his regular route during a storm early on Jan.
Karen Read, center, sits in court with her legal team during her trial at Norfolk County Superior Court, Thursday, June 20, 2024, in Dedham, Mass. Read is accused of backing her SUV into her Boston Police officer boyfriend, John O’Keefe, and leaving him to die in a blizzard in Canton, in 2022. Judge Beverly Cannone listens during the Karen Read murder trial at Norfolk County Superior Court in Dedham, Mass., Thursday, June 20, 2024.
Read’s lawyers say O’Keefe was beaten up in the house and was bitten by Albert’s dog, then brought outside. They say investigators focused on Read because she was a “convenient outsider” who saved them from having to consider other suspects, including Albert and other law enforcement officers who were at the party. The 911 system across Massachusetts is restored after going down for hoursLoughran testified that he passed by the house around 2:45 a.m.
Massachusetts State Trooper Joseph Paul testified that an analysis of safety system data from Read’s SUV indicated her vehicle slowed in reverse — going from 24.2 mph to 23.6 mph — which was consistent with a “pedestrian strike.” He also said O’Keefe’s injuries were consistent with being struck by a vehicle.
Asked by the defense Friday if O’Keefe’s injuries were “inconsistent” with being struck by Read’s SUV at 24 mph, Scordi-Bello said, “I would say it’s likely and unlikely at the same time depending on the position of the body and the vehicle in question.”
