Youth crimes can leave lasting impacts. In 2019, a group led by a 16-year-old went on a crime spree that included several carjackings and one rape. “I was terrified, my life was flashing before my eyes,” says one victim. He noticed an unfamiliar SUV nearby but figured it belonged to a weekend visitor.

Then, at 15, he was about to fight another student when a school security officer intervened. When she tried to detain him, he grabbed her by the neck and threw her aside. A judge put him back on probation.
In 2019, just before Polo’s 16th birthday, the court referred the family for intensive therapy. They were placed on a waitlist.On a cool evening that November, a 28-year-old woman was entering her car in Cleveland’s Ohio City neighborhood when two youths approached, armed. She tried kicking them away, but one punched her in the face. They grabbed her purse, phone and watch, then fled.
Polo escaped, but his brother was caught. Inside the Trax, police recovered the Ohio City victim’s wallet. A week after, a 25-year-old woman was leaving an Ohio City boxing gym when Polo appeared. He threatened to shoot her, forced her into the car, raped her and fled in the vehicle, taking her purse and phones, police say.
He was sent to a mental health facility for treatment before his trial. But just before his release, he escaped, sparking a nine-day manhunt and a $5,000 reward for information leading to his arrest. Eventually he was captured.
