Danielle Mullan, whose mother Marie Cromie died after years of ill health from a contaminated blood transfusion, said getting the compensation meant she could finally grieve for her mum. The Belfast woman had battled health problems for years.

Calls for Ken Clarke to lose his peerage over 'indefensible' actions during the infected blood scandal are 'totally understandable', a Cabinet minister said today.

He was also slammed for claiming in evidence to the inquiry that he was only being linked to the scandal due to being famous. In a round of TV and radio interviews this morning, Mr Stride said he 'totally understands' why victims of the infected blood scandal are calling for Lord Clarke to be stripped of his peerage.

He added: 'It's not a matter for Government I think to opine on forfeiture of honours, there's a process that is there for that that is established outside of Government.' Mr Stride also told LBC: 'Sir Brian has come forward with some very strong observations of Ken, in the context of the scandal. Clearly there are questions that I've no doubt Ken will be addressing in time.'

Sir Brian accused Lord Clarke of being 'unfairly dismissive of, and disparaging towards, many who had suffered physically, mentally, socially and financially from what occurred'. Des Collins, a solicitor representing 1,500 victims of the scandal, told the Telegraph: 'He should have his peerage stripped. Take no prisoners.'

This decision by Lord Clarke was described as 'ill-considered', and branding the infections 'unavoidable' set the tone for government response for years to come. 'Indeed, adopting the helpful, responsive or responsible approach to the provision of evidence to a public inquiry into the infection and deaths or thousands of people which the public has the right to expect from former government ministers.'

'At every level, the people and institutions in which we place our trust failed in the most harrowing and devastating way,' the Prime Minister said in a statement to the House of Commons on Monday. This is likely to come under five main categories: injury, social impact, autonomy, care and financial loss.

After a decades-long battle for justice, campaigners welcomed the probe's recommendations but lamented the fact delays meant many of those responsible would never be held to account. Asked if Lord Clarke should stay in position in the House of Lords, he said: 'We wrote to the Upper House when it was suggested that he was going to get a peerage, saying 'Please don't do that yet, wait until the Infected Blood Inquiry has reported'.
