Hold on, please! The first of Denver International Airport's newest train cars are approaching the station.
DIA held a ribbon-cutting ceremony Tuesday to commemorate the new cars. The first six are already operational.
The new additions are expected to improve on the existing underground train between the terminal and concourses. DIA said a total of 26 new train cars are expected to arrive throughout this year and next. The airport said its current train fleet consists of 31 train cars, and they're expanding it to 41 train cars this year.
Sixteen train cars in the airport's fleet are from when the airport opened in 1995 and have been due for a replacement. DIA estimates these cars to have traveled more than 1.6 million miles in their lifetimes. DIA said the new train cars will increase the number of passengers that can be moved to the gates by about 850 people per hour. They're also more energy efficient, the airport said.. The cars were supposed to be delivered in May 2022, but the delivery was pushed back multiple times due to"9NEWS+ has multiple live daily shows including 9NEWS Mornings, Next with Kyle Clark and 9NEWS+ Daily, an original streaming program.
