The Alaska Department of Fish and Game says bears are showing up in unexpected places and homeless camps are attracting them.

Published: Jul. 30, 2024 at 4:30 PM AKDTANCHORAGE, Alaska - Wildlife Biologist Cory Stantorf said human bear encounters are not up in the Anchorage area this summer, but they are seeing more bears in less expected places — which Stantorf said are attracted by homeless camps.

One of the camps experiencing persistent bear issues is Davis Park in Mountain View. Camp sites strewn with garbage are the norm there. Campers agreed that bears are a common sight, including a black bear cub that visits the camp regularly. One woman said no one has seen the bear’s mother in the few months that it has been coming to the camp, so they believe the mother is dead. She said people have been feeding the cub as a result.
