Emma Cooper's film refused to take an explicit side, giving no new insight or perspective on an already well-covered case
to court in Virginia. As they hashed out a defamation case for almost a month, the world watched on with ghoulish fascination.claiming to be “a public figure representing domestic abuse”. Heard countersued, accusing Depp of orchestrating an online “harassment campaign” designed to get her fired from various projects.
It was a complicated, controversial case which became a lightning rod for conversations about victim blaming, online trolling, misogyny, so-called men’s rights and #MeToo., Channel 4’s new three-part documentary series, made an attempt to untangle the many threads and present an unbiased, objective timeline of events. Usually, a trial of this nature would be held in private but thanks to Virginia law, cameras live-streamed the whole thing.
With no voiceover or interviews with talking heads, director Emma Cooper let the footage do the talking. We watched lawyers make their opening statements, question their respective clients and cross-examine both Depp and Heard. But most interesting was the interloping of footage from YouTube commentators and podcasters not affiliated with the trial in any way. Instant reactions to the court livestream were akin to watching a football match , giving a sense of just how invested the public were.
“I do this for fun” said YouTuber Darthnews, who released near-daily videos during the trial with titles like “Amber can’t stop lying”. “But I have a dog in this fight because I give a fuck about Johnny Depp and men’s rights.” While future episodes will needle the role of social media on the trial in more detail, even the small glimpse we got into the sexist vitriol aimed at Heard from Depp’s fans in this first hour was distressing.
