Peter Hughes and his wife Anne, 78, were stunned to see 'a foot and a leg' emerge at the Port of Calais after a holiday
The Deputy Prime Minister is looking 'urgently' into the case of a retired ambulance service worker told by the Home Office he's being fined £6,000 after a migrant stowed inside his camping trailer in France without his knowledge in a failed bid to illegally enter the UK.
They said they knew nothing of the would-be stowaway, and regularly checked the trailer was secure because they were driving around France. In a statement to the M.E.N., the Deputy PM said: "I know that this incident has been extremely stressful for Mr and Mrs Hughes and I am looking into this as a matter of urgency to reach a satisfactory resolution as soon as possible."After we described the case in its entirety and sent over the demand Mr Hughes was sent, a spokesperson for the Home Office told the M.E.N.
The notice to Mr Hughes says it's been issued under the Immigration and Asylum Act 1999: The Carriers' Liability Regulations 2002.
