Special menus May 4 at Los Gatos, Pleasanton restaurants
Mint juleps will be served Saturday at The Bywater in Los Gatos and all weekend long at Sabio on Main in Pleasanton. The day of the Kentucky Derby — this year, Saturday, May 4 — is a wonderful time to indulge in the specialties for which the race and that region are known.
— In Los Gatos, The Bywater will host a daylong party starting at 11 a.m. with soft-shell crab, freshly shucked oysters — plus mint juleps and contests for best women’s hat, best dressed and most dapper couple. The event starts at 11 a.m. Tickets for the party only are $25, and proceeds will be donated to World Central Kitchen.
— At Sabio on Main in Pleasanton, executive chef Francis X. Hogan will serve that classic Kentucky sandwich, the Hot Brown, on both days of Derby weekend. The open-face sandwich was invented in 1926 at the Brown Hotel in Louisville. Hogan’s version is made with smoked heritage turkey, artisanal Baker’s Bacon and Mornay sauce on toasted, house-baked brioche. As for the mint juleps, he says, “We’ll serve our juleps the proper way, smashing our ice to order in a Lewis Bag.
