It has not been uncommon for staff and supporters to loan money to the club to keep the lights on and help maintain some sort of stable financial footing.
A generation has passed since the takeover and though many will claim they don’t necessarily hate Red Bull, there is a sense that this encounter, 18 years in the making, is about something more. Austria Salzburg are playing for an ideology, a rejection of the hyper-commercialisation that you could quite easily argue is summed up by a network of clubs being used as a marketing exercise for an energy drinks company.
Despite the rivalry, there wasn’t any significant trouble, but that did not stop precautions from being taken. One Austria staff member stayed at the Grodig stadium late into the previous night lest some Red Bull fans decide to try something naughty. Some did show up, but were scared off by security.
Nobody expected it to be a contest and it wasn’t, the Champions League team giving the side who usually play in the regional divisions a bit of a chasing, in the early and latter stages of the game particularly.
