manager Derek McInnes has vowed to do everything he can to live up to the Ibrox expectations after sealing a dream return to the club.
Gers chairman Andrew Cavenagh and chief exec Jim Gillespie moved swiftly to snatch the Hearts boss from Tynecastle after allowing Danny Rohl to join RB Salzburg, theAnd now McInnes is aiming to lead the club he grew up supporting back to the top of ScottishThe 54-year-old will be joined in Govan by his Jam Tarts assistants Alan Archibald, Paul Sheerin and Craig Clark after signing a three-year contract. But the new management team won’t have long to get to grips with their new role, with the first-team squad due back for pre-season training on Monday.
However, McInnes - who spent five years at Ibrox as player under Walter Smith and Dick Advocaat during a spell stretching from 1995 to 2000, during which he lifted two league titles and aMcInnes said: “It is a real honour to become the manager of Rangers Football Club.
“It is no secret that I grew up a Rangers supporter, and I am convinced this is the right time to take on this prestigious role given the club’s structure, and leadership from Andrew, the Board, and Jim. “The demands here are clear, and our supporters rightfully have high expectations. It is up to me, my staff and my players to meet those expectations, and have this club performing as it should.
“There is a lot of hard work ahead, but already the preparations have begun, and I am looking forward to meeting the current squad in the coming weeks and welcoming some new faces. ” Rohl - along with backroom team members Sascha Lenze and Tristan Steiner - has been allowed to move to Austria after a breakdown in relations with supporters following the collapse of last season’s title bid.
That deal has banked the Ibrox club around £2million in compensation cash, with £600,000 handed over to Hearts to secure McInnes’ arrival. But Cavenagh believes it will be money well spent after landing a boss who has more than 800 games on the touchline under his belt.
The club’s American owner has made it a priority this summer to tune the club back into its Scottish roots and believes the appointment of McInnes, along with the signing of his Gorgie skipper Lawrence Shankland, will go a long way towards that. McInnes started his managerial career at St Johnstone in 2007 and has gone on to have spells at Bristol City, Aberdeen, Kilmarnock and most recently Hearts, who he almost led to their first title in 66 years before a final day defeat at Celtic Park.
But Cavenagh is hoping this year’s PFA Scotland, SPFL and SFWA Manager of the Year will take Gers one step further.. He is someone we have always rated highly, and we believe he is exactly what this club needs at this moment in time.
“His deep Scottish and Rangers experience are important for us. He knows how to win in this league, and he is coming off an extremely strong season with Hearts.
"He and his staff put in a significant amount of hard work during his time in charge, which we are greatly appreciative of. Gillespie, added: “Derek understands what this club stands for, and the standards required to succeed here.
“We are very pleased that we were able to get Derek in position prior to pre-season training beginning. With Derek's addition to the team, we will continue to drive forward to make this club win consistently. ” Jambos chiefs said in their own statement that McInnes had “made it clear that he wished to pursue this opportunity” and only agreed to let him leave after thrashing out compensation terms.
It added: “Derek, Alan and Paul leave with our thanks for the contribution they made during their time at Tynecastle. Last season represented an important step forward for the club and they played a valued role in that progress.
“The club’s ambitions, direction and commitment to success remain unchanged. Our progress has been driven by a clear strategy, significant investment, and strong foundations that extend far beyond any one individual.
“Those foundations remain firmly in place and provide the platform for the next phase of our development. “Succession planning is a continuous process and preparations for this eventuality have already been undertaken. A number of candidates have been identified and the process of appointing a new Head Coach has already begun, with the aim of making the right appointment as swiftly as possible. ”
