Lilian Seenoi-Barr , the Mayor of Derry City and Strabane and a councillor for Derry City and Strabane District Council, has pledged to make the city a zero-tolerance zone for violence against women . Seenoi-Barr made this commitment following an event at the Guildhall in Londonderry dedicated to discussing violence against women and girls.
The event, hosted by the Mayor herself, drew attendees from various backgrounds, including PSNI Ch Supt Gillian Kearney, representatives from the Housing Executive, and survivors of domestic abuse. Seenoi-Barr emphasized the importance of visible action, stating that practical measures like billboards can demonstrate a city-wide commitment to fighting for women's rights. She stressed that tackling violence against women is a collective responsibility, urging men to recognize the issue's impact on their daughters, aunts, and sisters. During the event, attendees shared impactful stories and proposed solutions, including a comprehensive educational program focused on consent and respect for young women. One poignant anecdote highlighted the need for increased vigilance, as a woman's accidental alarm activation went unheeded, demonstrating a lack of active support for victims in distress. PSNI Ch Supt Gillian Kearney, also a speaker at the event, assured attendees that the Derry City and Strabane PSNI is actively listening and committed to addressing the issue.
