Tournaments like the Dr McKenna Cup are under threat after the GPA passed a motion calling for their removal from the GAA calendar
Derry and Slaughtneil star Brendan Rogers has emerged as an unlikely ally for the continuation of the GAA’s pre-season competitions, such as the Dr McKenna Cup.
Yet Rogers, who is shortlisted for the 2023 Footballer of the Year award, insists county teams would organise friendlies if pre-season tournaments were abolished. They gained promotion to Division One and retained the Anglo Celt Cup and pushed Kerry all the way in a pulsating All-Ireland SFC semi-final in July, losing by two points.
