This honor acknowledges the city’s commitment to supporting military veterans, particularly the 2,850 U.S. military veterans living in DeSoto. The announcement was made during a City Council meeting on Tuesday evening.“Tonight, DeSoto joins a proud lineage of communities nationwide that honor and recognize the sacrifices made by our Purple Heart recipients,” said Eric Newton, senior vice commander of the Military Order of the Purple Heart Chapter #1513.
The ceremony also featured Lisa Holmes-Lunkwicz from the Combat Wounded Service Organization, who is the widow of U.S. Army infantryman Jon Lunkwicz, a Purple Heart recipient who served in Vietnam. “Combat Wounded was created to support the Military Order of the Purple Heart in fulfilling its mission. We proudly stand behind American heroes like those honored in DeSoto tonight,” she said.The Purple Heart is the oldest active military award in the U.S.
