Families desperately scoured the filthy cells of Syria's forbidding Sednaya prison on Monday, December 9, for any sign of long-detained relatives after its gates were flung open by rebels.
Five years after his uncle was snatched by Syrian regime henchmen and thrown in the notorious Saydnaya prison, last week's lightening offensive finally gave Firas Kaid hope.
'Everyone needs to see this. Film it and show it to the whole world. Show everyone, show all the Arab countries, the crimes and the evil of Bashar al-Assad.' A woman reacts with joy outside Sednaya Prison. The Damascus Countryside Governorate has had to go on social media to ask people to provide the codes to electronic underground doors to free the ‘more than 100,000 detainees who can be seen on CCTV monitors’
But after days of searching, The Syrian Civil Defence - dubbed the White Helmets - yesterday called off the mission saying there was no evidence of 'undiscovered secret cells'. 'They didn't tell us he was gone or anything,' he explained. 'They don't inform you about how he is. But if you ask about someone, they give you his ID card and say he's dead.'
People search through papers as they join members of the Syrian civil defence group to search for prisoners underground 'My husband was arrested on the road,' she said. 'He was just travelling with my brother and they just took him.
