Although the region’s labor force added 30,000 jobs in the 12 months through January, unemployment spiked to 3.8% from 3.1% a month earlier.
Texas added nearly 264,000 jobs in the 12 months through January, a 1.9% increase from January 2023, according to the latest data from the Texas Workforce Commission and Bureau of Labor statistics. Locally, the story was similar: The number of jobs in the San Antonio-New Braunfels metro area was up 2.7% over the past year. As the area’s labor force continued growing from December through January, though, the unemployment rate spiked to 3.8% from 3.1% the month before.
” While the state reported job growth across five of the 11 industries it tracks, the unadjusted numbers for the San Antonio-New Braunfels region showed slight job losses in most industries during January. Still, 10 of 11 tracked industries had more jobs than they did a year ago. The information sector — which includes traditional and online publishing, broadcasting and the motion picture industry — was the only one that shrank both over the month and year. It was down nearly 4% year over year.
