Rangers are through but not without some VAR drama at the national stadium

Cyriel Dessers and Ross McCausland climbed off the bench to fire Rangers into the Premier Sports Cup quarter-finals with a 2-0 win - but St Johnstone claim the first goal should never have stood.

Those missed chances produced the first groans of the afternoon but there was almost an altogether angrier outburst on 24 minutes as St Johnstone created a huge opening. Andre Raymond cut past Tavernier as Cerny was caught out of position. Driving towards goal, Jack Butland’s goal looked under major threat until Raymond drove his shot against John Souttar’s legs, watching with frustration as the ricochet bounced wide of the far post.

St Johnstone came close again five minutes before the break when Matt Smith’s cross, found Adama Sidibeh at the front post. The Gambian’s sweeping volley flashed off Butland’s left hand post as the former England keeper was left to shoot daggers at the men in front of him. Replays showed no infringement had been committed. But given the official’s whistle appeared to have sounded before the ball crossed the line, the Saints players were left stunned when MacDermid opted to give the goal after a trip to the screen.

New season, new VAR controversy Given the vast number of VAR issues we Scotland’s refs endured last season, they’ve actually done well to make it to the third week of the season before experiencing the first controversy of the new campaign. Apathy over outrage With anger brewing following the club’s disastrous Champions League exit at the hands of Dynamo Kyiv on Tuesday, there’s were whispers of a pre-match protest on the Hampden steps.
