Victorian Treasurer Tim Pallas has announced plans to broaden a tax on vacant residential properties to the rest of the state.

Currently, the tax applies to residential properties across 16 inner and middle Melbourne councils that are unoccupied for more than six months a year. "We are not putting in place a rule for landowners that we as a state are not going to deploy to ourselves," Pallas said.
