Only six days before the Gold Coast Suns board sacked coach Stuart Dew, the club’s chief executive Mark Evans made a public declaration of support for the embattled leader.

Evans, standing alongside Dew, emphasised the need for “stability” at the club to “allow the athletes and coaches to go about their business.”

Evans had felt it necessary to defend Dew after this masthead’s columnist Caroline Wilson accurately forecast on the Footy Classified programFollowing Evans’ defence, which now appears farcical given Dew’s dismissal, Wilson restated her prediction that Dew’s days at the club were numbered and “nothing that has occurred since has altered that view.”

Dew did the spade work on the rebuild and was unlucky to lose Tom Lynch to the Tigers – less so Steven May, whom the club, with the coach’s blessing, moved on when he was contracted. But Dew was damned this year by comparisons with Essendon, Adelaide and Greater Western Sydney - all of which finished behind the Suns in 2022 and have pushed ahead.

The Suns will offer the now vacant position to Hardwick, who is overseas, but will take their call and listen to what the competition’s 17th team has to offer.
