Rhaenys volunteers herself and her dragon Meleys to fight Aegon on behalf of Team Black and for Rhaenhyra. Aegon mounts his dragon Sunfyre who is pretty inexperienced in fighting. The two clash in the air and it seems like Rhaenys and Meleys are having the upper hand when Aemond and his veteran dragon Vhagar, who is the biggest and oldest of the land approaches and attacks Rhaenys.Aemond’s whole plan beforehand was to attach Rhaenys herself, so he wants to take things on his own hands.
Aegon falls with Sunfyre and Rhaenys narrowly escapes with Meleys. In a moment of brief peace, Aemond and Vhagar give the final blow to Rhaenys and Meleys to kill them.The shocking cliffhanger Aegon seems to have life-threatening injuries at the end of the episode. Aemond points to the motionless Aegon after Criston Cole asks, “Where’s his Grace?”
In the book, Aegon doesn’t succumb to his injuries. However, those injuries caused him to be bedridden for at least a year. He refused to see anyone except for Alicent and Criston. He actually dies by poison inafter Corlys Velaryon, the Sea Snake, makes a plea to Aegon to surrender his crown. It was never confirmed who poisoned him.
