Clearly, the 49ers acquired Young with very little risk.
He's not expensive, they don't have to commit to him long term and all they had to give up to get him was a third-round compensatory pick. So that's a trade the 49ers should feel good about, even though the Commanders clearly didn't want Young anymore, essentially gave him away after drafting him with the No. 2 pick in 2020. Apparently, they felt he ignored his assignments and hunted splash plays.
But to win at the trade deadline, the 49ers would have had to improve an area of weakness, not one of strength. The pass rush already is good -- the 49ers rank 9th out of 32 teams in pressure rate. That's good. What they really need is another run defender to improve their 16th-ranked run defense in terms of yards per carry allowed. They also need a better cornerback who can take away some of these quick completions that are negating the 49ers' rush.
Meanwhile, the Seahawks, who are ahead of the 49ers in the NFC West, addressed a big weakness before the deadline by trading for Frank Clark and Leonard Williams -- two excellent defensive linemen. The Seahawks were weak in the trenches, because they spent their first-round pick on a cornerback this season. So they've balanced out their defense. As opposed to the 49ers, who focus purely on pass rush.Copyright ABG-SI LLC. SPORTS ILLUSTRATED is a registered trademark of ABG-SI LLC.
