While accessing healthcare is like second nature for most Australians, migrants and refugees can struggle.University of Southern Queensland public health expert Aletha Ward said the health gap in migrant communities was never clearer than in the pandemic.

"Migrant death from COVID-19 was considerably higher than non-migrant deaths in Australia. During the Delta outbreak, more than 70 per cent of all deaths were from migrants." "We often lose migrants in healthcare follow-ups due to being unable to read the hospital follow-up letter, unable to get transportation to the appointment, and unable to navigate the healthcare system, including filling out required forms."Dr Ward said projects like My Language Project are vital, but they aren't a silver bullet, and more needs to be done.
