It could be years before plans aimed at protecting Didsbury from the River Mersey are changed, despite three floods in five years, the Environment Agency has said.
Angry councillors have now called on the agency to upgrade the probability of flooding in the suburb from one per cent — i.e. ‘1 in 100 years’ — after the Mersey also burst its banks in 2021 and 2023. A Liberal Democrat motion, supported by all town hall parties, also ‘urged the Environment Agency’s update of the Mersey Flooding strategy, started in 2021, expedited as a matter of urgency’.
A spokesperson said: “We understand the devastating impact flooding has, which is why reducing flood risk is our top priority. The Environment Agency has been working on a flood risk management strategy for South Mersey, which is currently scheduled to complete in summer 2027. The organisation is also currently overseeing emergency repairs to the Mersey’s banks, using a helicopter to place one-tonne bags of rock near the river to reinforce it while a permanent solution can be found.
