ADHD is often associated with being hyper or struggling to concentrate – but there are more symptoms that can be linked
ADHD is a term that most of us will have heard of. In the past, it has been associated with loudness and getting distracted often, but there's a lot more that comes into it.Delayed Sleep Phase Syndrome A common symptom is that those with ADHD can struggle to get up in the morning.
This can by due to Delayed Sleep Phase Syndrome – a condition where you essentially put off going to sleep for two or more hours and then struggle to get up the next day. The NHS explains: 'DSPD, often known as"night owls" is characterised by an inability to fall asleep until two to six hours after usual sleep onset times resulting in extreme difficulty with waking.'According to Medical News Today, those with ADHD 'may also experience difficulty staying awake during the day or falling asleep at night. This may be due to hyperactivity and trouble regulating emotions, behavior, and attention span.
Who does this affect? According to the NHS, sleep issues particularly affect those with inattentive ADHD which means those who have problems with concentrating and focusing. It says: 'If you have inattentive ADHD, you are more likely to go to bed at a later time, whilst those with predominantly hyperactive and/or impulsive symptoms are more likely to experience insomnia.This refers to the two categories of behavioural problems that people with ADHD experience:Does this affect children? The NHS said that children with ADHD do experience sleep difficulties. But sleep issues only worsen in adolescence and adulthood.
