I always knew this would happen one day but I didn’t expect it to hit me in quite the way it has this week. I’ve covered the courts, either in Nottingham or Derby, for the best part of two decades and so the law of averages means that at some point I'm going to either know, or know of, someone who finds themselves before a judge.
But this week was on another level altogether. Because the man who was on trial was one of my former teachers and his victim was the younger brother of a girl who was in the same class as me half a century ago. I introduced myself to Richard’s family who lived just round the corner from where I was born and grew up in Aspley. I had not seen Rae in 43 years and I have little recollection of meeting Andrew - Richard’s twin brother - when we were all young. But when they told me they wanted to get Richard’s story out there to offer a voice to other sex abuse victims, I felt an immediate connection.
As some of you may know, sex abuse victims enjoy lifetime anonymity in terms of reporting, unless they waive that right. But a strange quirk of media law means that if that person has died - as Richard tragically did in 2022 - that anonymity no longer exists and their name and details can be published.
