Mr Johnston, who lives in Newmarket, Suffolk, said the person who did his assessment was not medically trained and, in his opinion, did not understand what it was like living with the illness. He said trying to describe his daily life in a short time – how he fed himself, whether he could use the microwave and the toilet was “brutal”.

He had heard of other MS sufferers with a debilitating condition who had not received the PIP and was concerned that others would not get the help they needed if they looked well enough to handle day-to-day home living or they were articulate enough to describe how they lived at home. He was also concerned about the effect of combining two separate benefits, expecting the Government to have “go back to scratch” in the overhaul.

“The Health and Disability White Paper commits to removing the financial disincentives that exist within the current system by scrapping the Work Capability Assessment, improving support and the experience for people when applying for and receiving benefits.
