A man who cares for his disabled partner has criticised the government for repeatedly demanding Personal Independence Payment (PIP) claimants provide evidence. Gary Robinson, who lives in Wigan and works in Lancashire, said PIP claimants are periodically asked to re-submit evidence to the Department for Work and Pensions (DWP) to ensure they are still entitled to the benefit. Gary, 44, said the assessment process 'isn't straight-forward' and pointed out that if claimants are assessed as no longer being eligible the appeals process can take months. He launched a petition to raise awareness about the issue.
A man who cares for his disabled partner has criticised the government for repeatedly demanding Personal Independence Payment claimants provide evidence.
"The current length of time it's taking to get to tribunal is up to a year and during that time your benefits have completely stopped," Gary told LancsLive. Gary also highlighted the lack of face-to-face assessments, which were suspended during the Covid pandemic and later scrapped altogether in most cases. He added that genuine claimants "are more angry than anyone" when somebody fraudulently attempts to claim benefits.
The DWP has confirmed the application process for PIP is being “kept under review” after Liberal Democrat MP Ian Roome asked why “reassessments are being scheduled for people with incurable disabilities and terminal illnesses”. He highlighted how one of his constituents in receipt of PIP is sight-impaired, deaf-blind registered and cannot use a phone or fill out forms.
