Steph, 57, branded the incident 'embarrassing' and 'humiliating'.

A disabled woman in a wheelchair was left ‘humiliated’ when Travelodge staff refused to let her stay in a double bed for ‘health and safety reasons’.

The author had previously stayed at the same hotel in a double bed with her husband, but the customer service representative insisted she was mistaken – and even quizzed her on why she ‘needed’ one during her stay. ‘It felt almost like she was saying, “Well what do you want a double bed for, you’re disabled”. I wanted to say, “What do you think I need it for!”’Steph, a former investigator for Leicestershire Police, arrived at the hotel later that day and found she and her husband had been upgraded to a SuperRoom with a double bed.

But when Steph’s husband rang the same hotel on August 6 he was told again, by a different employee, that a disabled customer could not have a double bed in an accessible room. The same day, a Metro.co.uk reporter rang the Travelodge customer service line and specifically requested an accessible room with a double bed.

‘The woman I spoke to was rude and it was horrible. No one should have to go through that just because they’re disabled. Travelodge currently lists that all their rooms have zip and link mattresses, which means they can be set up as double beds or twins in every room.
