Scottish Labour criticises Disclosure Scotland for excessive spending on temporary staff and increasing delays in processing criminal record checks.
Scottish Labour has criticised Disclosure Scotland after it was revealed the organisation has spent over £100 million on temporary staff in a 12-year period. The party also highlighted increasing delays in processing criminal record checks for employers and third-sector organisations, which have worsened over the past eight years. Figures show a sharp rise from around £1.9 million on temporary workers in 2012 to £39.8 million by 2018, with approximately £16.6 million spent in 2018 alone.
Recently, nearly £9.2 million was paid to agency and contractor staff last year, with at least another £7.5 million this year, bringing the total to around £103 million over the twelve years. Data also reveals the average time for Disclosure Scotland to complete criminal record checks is rising, with employers experiencing longer waits, climbing to 5.9 days in 2023 from four days in 2016, particularly for PVG scheme record updates. Scottish Labour’s spokesperson for children and young people, Martin Whitfield, criticised the SNP’s management of the agency

Scots Pensioners to Receive Winter Fuel Payments of £100 to £300 Next YearThe Scottish National Party (SNP) Government has decided to provide pensioners with fuel payments ranging from £100 to £300 next winter, overturning the Labour party's means-testing plan. Social Justice Cabinet Secretary Shirley-Anne Somerville has introduced a two-tier payment system, set to commence in the following year, ensuring all pensioners will receive financial aid to heat their homes. This decision comes as a response to the UK Labour Chancellor Rachel Reeves’ plan to cut eligibility for the Winter Fuel Payment, a move criticized for leaving 900,000 Scots without support amid rising energy bills and an expected harsh winter.
