At least 212 people were captured and dragged back to Gaza.This figure includes the disputed toll of 500 people from a rocket attack on a hospital.
On October 22, Israeli warplanes struck targets across Gaza, two airports in Syria, and a mosque in the occupied West Bank allegedly used by militants. Israel’s military said the country had increased airstrikes across Gaza to hit targets that would reduce the risk to troops in the next stage of the war.
Amid the United States declaration that it stands solidly behind Israel in its war against Hamas, US Secretary of State Antony Blinken said Hamas was responsible, not just for its brutal rampage in southern Israel, but for the deaths of civilians in Israel’s attacks on Gaza.He said the militants were operating among the civilian population and its tunnels were buried under hospitals and schools.
“But I believe to the core of my soul that the response Israel is taking, and with it the American support both for that response, and for the status quo of the occupation, will only lead to more and deeper suffering for both the Israeli and the Palestinian people — and is not in the long-term American interest.”
