COMMENT: Diverse leadership is more than skin deep. Figureheads need to be relatable, says Denise Myers
VERY FEW topics in public discourse elicit more bewilderment, anger and confusion than that of diversity. From the ‘positive’ discrimination of employment quotas to the recasting of everyday language and terms that historically belittle and ‘other’; it might all seem like unresolvable noise. Yet no one expects positive social impact and change to come from comfortable discussions.
But this seductive narrative of self-made success glosses over a much more unattractive truth. August is a time of reckoning for GCSE and A-level students waiting to see whether they’re able to progress into further study in the subjects and institutions of their choice. This underlying position of privilege is often deliberately occluded by a more PR-able narrative that positions these figureheads asto the everyman when, in reality, they are likely to have more in common with high society than the ordinary constituents in which they serve. Diversity in this sense is literally skin deep, no better than a deceptive vanity metric that might champion change but actually surreptitiously works to maintain the status quo.
I was, of course, able to transform this negative feedback into positive energy, which fuelled my determination to prove my teacher wrong. But not every child, student or young person can do that.
