It all starts with a twinge in your neck. A distinct feeling that you might be going cross-eyed follows, and then shortly after that, your skin starts to droop. Welcome to digital fatigue, the modern malady many have never heard of, but that’s much more common than you think – especially now. Following a lockdown that prompted our collective screen time to skyrocket, we’re a nation showing serious signs of digital fatigue.
“If you find yourself with sore, strained eyes, more headaches than usual and you’re suffering from poor posture or increased neck and shoulder pain, chances are you might be suffering from digital fatigue,”a holistic facialist, aromatherapist and acupuncturist says, pointing out that a lack of productivity, low mood and even a compromised immune system can follow as a result.
Blue light also has its wicked way with our skin: “It penetrates deeper into the skin structure than UVA rays, right to the dermis where our collagen and elastin – integral components of healthy skin – are made,” says de Mamiel. “In short, too much blue light causes slow but serious degradation of our skin’s structure, leading to more fine lines and wrinkles, a loss of firmness and increased pigmentation.
While all of this might sound rather doom and gloom, knowledge is power, and there are ways to combat the effects of digital fatigue. Here are six of them.“Limit the amount of time you spend in front of your screens, whether it’s a laptop, mobile phone, TV or tablet,” advises de Mamiel. Try an app like, which plants a virtual tree whenever you want to stay focused. The longer you avoid your phone, the bigger your tree will get, with the goal being to grow your own forest – it’s wholesome stuff.
