Doctors say the patient, a 62-year-old-man is recovering well from the surgery. It is seen as a milestone and a potential solution to the worldwide shortage of human organs for patients who need transplants.

Doctors at Massachusetts General Hospital on Thursday said they have transplanted a pig kidney into a living human, the first such procedure in the world.

The surgery is a milestone in the field known as xenotransplantation — when an organ from one species is transplanted into another — and is seen as a potential solution to the worldwide shortage of human organs for patients who need transplants. The kidney was genetically edited using CRISPR-Cas9 technology to remove harmful pig genes and add human genes to make it more compatible with a human body.

Doctors at Mass General said the transplant patient, 62-year-old Richard Slayman of Weymouth, is recovering well at the hospital following the March 16 operation. “I saw it not only as a way to help me, but a way to provide hope for the thousands of people who need a transplant to survive,” Slayman said of his decision to undergo the experimental procedure in a statement. This story is developing. It will be updated as more information may become available.
